HELD AT THE EDGE

My visual work resonates with my writing and explores memory, perception and identity, conflict, and transformation.

Each body of work is born from a distinct period of my life, shaped by both external environments and internal states. As these conditions evolve, the work adapts accordingly—sometimes subtly, sometimes drastically.

Shaped by place, experience, and internal states.

JAANG (WAR)

Post Afghanistan and Iraq work, 2016 - 2017.

Rupture & intensity. This series responds to years spent in conflict environments, exploring the psychological and emotional residue of war—its fragmentation, intensity, and aftermath.

LAND OF THE PURE

Lahore & Islamabad, Pakistan, 2010 - 2012.

Identity & place. Rooted in memory and identity, this work reflects on belonging and the layered cultural landscapes of Pakistan.

NOT NEUTRAL

Zurich, Switzerland, 2013 - 2016.

Illusion of order. In contrast to previous environments, this series examines the illusion of neutrality, order, and sterility—political, cultural, and personal—and the tensions beneath them.

UNBOUND

Zurich, Switzerland, 2013 - 2016.

Movement beyond constraint. Created alongside Not Neutral, this series explores the ideas of constraint and release—what holds us, shapes us, and what we choose to transcend. It reflects on the visible and invisible boundaries we inherit and sometimes outgrow.

SACRED & PROFANE

various, USA, 2020 - 2021.

Meaning & perception. This exploration of duality—devotion and desire, discipline and release, the sacred and the everyday—features language and script—Arabic, Persian, Hebrew—moving through as both symbol and surface. What one viewer experiences as sacred, another may interpret as unfamiliar or charged, reflecting how meaning is shaped by memory, belief, and the internal landscapes we bring to our perceptions.

BLOOM

various, USA. 2021 - 2023.

Emergence & resolution. This quieter body of work emphasizes emergence, renewal, and the subtle process of becoming, with a shift in medium to textiles.

EARLY WORK

various, USA. 1994 - 2005.

Foundational. These early explorations of form, identity, and expression, while refining technique, lay the groundwork for my later work, which continues to explore the themes of conflict and transformation.

DHYANA (AWARENESS) - ONGOING

various, USA. 2017 - present

Rooted in early morning meditation, this series explores awareness as both a practice and a state. The work examines how perception transforms when attention stabilizes, leading to a dissolution of form into presence.

JAANG (WaR)

JAANG I. 60" X 48". Mixed Media.

This piece emerges from the psychological residue of conflict—fragmented, layered, and unresolved. The work reflects not the event of war itself, but its persistence: how it lingers in memory, perception, and the body long after the moment has passed. It resists resolution, holding instead the tension between presence and aftermath.

          SACRED & PROFANE

          ALIF NOON.  30" X 30". Textile.

A four-part textile composition referencing the structure of a prayer mat. Arabic script functions as both language and surface, raising questions of what is perceived as sacred, decorative, or charged through the viewer’s own frame of reference.
